The past week or so, Hugh has been experiencing night terrors. He wakes up in the middle of the night, screaming and thrashing, and it’s almost impossible to calm him down. The only solution we’ve found is sleeping with him so that when he begins to wake up, we can pat him and he goes back to sleep. But of course, that’s not a long term solution.
A friend recommended Rescue Remedy for Kids, a homeopathic medicine you can get at Whole Foods or your local hippy grocery store. Anybody else have tips?
I’m not overly worried, and I’ll expect he’ll outgrow it soon. There have been a number of transitions in his life the past few weeks – going from the beach house and sleeping with us to back home and in his own bed; going from no school back to school; changing teachers after a year and a half.
In the meantime, I welcome any advice while I try to keep the glass half full. With coffee, that is.

We’ve been using Rescue Remedy with O to help him settle for bed since he was about a year. We also use homeopathic chamomile, and Calms Forte for Kids (also avail at Whole Foods or similar hippie-type grocery store). I can’t offer anything about the night terrors specifically, but I think homeopathic options are good ones.
I hope they pass quickly, it must be hard to see him like that.

Do you give him 4 drops on his tongue and he takes it? Or mix it with liquid? Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like night terrors — is he unable to be awakened but sounds like a person in a horror movie? My daughter used to get them — would scream and scream and be unable to be awakened — but she would also never actually wake up (and I remember from my reading that you should not try and wake them up). We used to just hold her and sing to her until she stopped screaming — but it was really scary. She outgrew them. My unsolicited advice is to try not to change his bedtiome routine because of them.
